Deployment of EuroRoadS results

The main purpose of the EuroRoadS Forum is to support the implementation and exploitation of results from the EuroRoadS project, which was successfully finalised during the autumn 2006.

One important task for the project was to support the INSPIRE process and represent the road data community when describing the needs for as well as a solution for harmonisation of the road data network on a European level. The project’s implementation and exploitation plans also recognised that the INSPIRE Directive – if it would become a reality – also would be a strong driving force for the establishment of a European road data infrastructure.

These issues have now been put forward. The Directive of the European Parliament and the Council establishing an Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) entered into force on the 15th May 2007. Link to the Directive and related documents.

Adoption of EuroRoadS results

The framework of specifications being developed within the EuroRoadS project are now being used in different projects and applications. These practical use of the solutions will significantly support the deployment of the project results. Here are three examples:

Barents Road Database

Sustainable Transport in the Barents Region (STBR), Road Information Exchange System (Barents Road Database) is a sub project within a larger context aiming to provide easy access to road information and thus contribute to the development within the Barents region in areas like long-term planning, traffic planning, logistics, traffic safety etc. The establishment of a common road database will be based on the EuroRoadS specifications. More information.

ROSATTE

The ROSATTE project aims at establishing an efficient and quality ensured data supply chain from public authorities to commercial map providers with regards to safety related road content.

The proposed solutions may enhance the know-how and harmonisation generated on the road authorities’ side in EuroRoadS. In EuroRoadS a harmonised transfer of road data is in focus including certain safety related attributes.

Safe Operation for Large Vehicle Initiative

In the IVSS (Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems) project SOLVI (Safe Operation for Large Vehicle Initiative) the EuroRoadS specifications, and profiles of them, are used together with AGORA-C mapping technologies for exchange of static road data with special focus on incremental updates.

Review of draft implementing rules

EuroRoadS Forum is registered as a so called Spatial Data Interest Community (SDIC) within the European Commission. This means that the Forum will have the possibility to review draft implementing rules and other documents being produced within the INSPIRE process.

Furthermore, the Forum will have the opportunity to propose experts for the development of implementing rules for the data theme transportation networks.

Interested to take part?

Organisations who are interested to take part in reviewing the documents are welcome to contact the Forum secretariat:

The deadline for comments to the Commission is Friday 6th July. The exact form and timetable for our reviewing process will depend on the interest to take part, but we assume that most of the work will be carried out by using email and the Projectplace for working out comments.
