Workshop
"Implementing and exploiting
a European road data network"
The EuroRoadS workshop:
“Implementing and exploiting a European road data network” was held on 9
March 2006 in Paris. The workshop attracted more than 50 participants from
35 organisations within public and private sector, representing 18 European
countries.
The aim of the workshop was to present and discuss the EuroRoadS work-in-progress and specifically the development of the implementation and exploitation plans.
The workshop discussed strategic issues for deployment of the EuroRoadS solution, and the technical and business issues were discussed in parallel break-out sessions.
Technical breakout session
The main issues discussed at the technical breakout session was the general opinion of the initiative and the framework documents. The general opinion was that the EuroRoadS solution is feasible technically and that EuroRoadS supports high-end description as well as low-level geometry description as might be required on a European community level.
EuroRoadS does not harmonise the data content but allows putting the different content into a harmonised format and the top down approach has an inspiring effect on national and local initiatives as a role model to create conformity.
The recommendations for going forward with the EuroRoadS framework and the establishment of road data services between national authorities were supported. The next step is to go from theory to practise. Demands from outside could generate some initiatives in the public sector to supply EuroRoadS and get EuroRoadS successfully adopted
Business breakout session
The main issues discussed at the business breakout session were which benefits and business case the providers and the users have to adopt EuroRoadS.
The suppliers expressed interest in joining a EuroRoadS forum supporting discussions among the key players. One of the next steps to realise this could be setting up a Memorandum of Understanding to discuss what is realistic for a forum and what targets should be set.
The workshop has been very useful for the consortium, for both testing the EuroRoadS concept, for feedback from data providers and users of road data, as well as for a discussion of the next steps, to make EuroRoadS happen.
